Christmas lights
4 Dec 2023

The turning on of the Christmas lights in the country's big cities always marks the official start of the end-of-year festivities. Specifically, in the city of Alicante it went ahead by turning on its lights on November 17, which gave way to the lighting last week of the 145 kilometers of lights in Madrid, the 104 kilometers in Barcelona and, as of today Next, the lighting of the usual light show in Vigo.

Torrevieja, unlike other years in which it used to turn on its lights earlier, has decided this year to wait until December 1 to welcome Christmas. The choice of this date is due to the placement this year of 400 arches, plus 211 lamppost motifs, which add up to 611 elements distributed in 65 streets, walks and squares of the city, figures higher than last year.

Thus, the city will show off its patron saint and Christmas festival lighting at the "Lighting Lighting Festival" that will take place on the stage of the Plaza de la Constitución starting at 8:30 p.m. this Friday. An event that will be animated by a DJ and a performance by the 'Etiqueta Show' Orchestra and that will star in the beginning of the magic in the city, a luminous spectacle that can be seen until Sunday, January 7, 2024.

This year, the Christmas festive and cultural program is expected to be "the most extensive in the history of Torrevieja", according to what the City Council emphasizes. This program includes the traditional Patron Saint Festivities, which include activities such as performances of the musical "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" at the Municipal Theater on December 1, 2 and 3; the traditional municipal nativity scene, which will be inaugurated on Saturday, December 2; the traditional outings of Lily and her troupe of giants and big heads; the XXXI paella contest on the 6th and the concert of the famous group Arde Bogotá on the 5th at the Palacio de Deportes, among many other events planned.

In addition to being able to enjoy the city's most traditional festivals, the pleasant temperatures that surround its surroundings are perfect for enjoying the many emblematic places of Torrevieja and its best walks.

Walking along the Juan Aparicio promenade, whose cobblestones will soon be reflected by the Christmas lights, is a perfect option to enjoy the sea breeze and do physical exercise. In addition, this walk, which starts from Hombre del Mar and reaches Playa del Cura, is full of restaurants and bars where you can indulge yourself after a long walk that also passes by the famous Levante Dam, which offers views over the city port.

Another of the city's emblematic walks is the Vista Alegre. Walking along this white promenade, both day and night, is a treat for the eyes. Starting from the Vista Alegre fountain, where you can contemplate the history of Torrevieja in the form of engravings, it extends to the famous statues of the "musicians", next to the new statue that pays tribute to the Civil Guard.

An unbeatable way to end a long walk through Juan Aparicio and Vista Alegre would be to sit on the terrace of the Valor chocolate shop and enjoy a good chocolate with churros and then, with a full stomach and endorphins recharged, visit the nativity scene. municipal and contemplate the limousine spectacle that dresses the Church of the Immaculate Conception every year.

Other ideal places to walk and spend a pleasant moment outdoors are the Park of Nations, where the flags of all the member countries of the European Union appear on an island in the middle of the gigantic lake that is in the center of the park. , surrounded by ducks, chickens and peacocks. Already in territories belonging to La Mata, you can tour the Molino de Agua park, which starts from the Queen Mississippi restaurant and descends in a waterfall to a small lake in which dogs love to bathe in summer. From this park you can walk through the dunes of La Mata and reach its wide beaches.
